The 2026 Safe Access Award Nomination- Americans for Safe Access

Legal medical cannabis access does not guarantee that patients can obtain appropriate products, reliable information, or knowledgeable healthcare guidance. Rural residents may live far from providers, patients with disabilities may encounter physical and communication barriers, and people with limited incomes may struggle to afford consistent treatment. Veterans, first responders, older adults, and people with complex medical conditions can face additional institutional or healthcare obstacles. These barriers affect not only whether patients can obtain cannabis, but also whether they can use it safely and successfully.

The Safe Access Award celebrates programs and initiatives that close the gap between legal permission and meaningful patient access. It recognizes efforts to expand credible education, healthcare resources, individualized support, affordability, patient advocacy, and assistance navigating medical cannabis systems. By addressing the circumstances that prevent people from making informed treatment decisions, these initiatives help ensure that safety protections and healthcare opportunities reach patients with different needs and resources.

The 2026 nominees -Veterans Initiative 22, My TCBD Inc., Global Cannabinoid Research Center, Maine Office of Cannabis Policy, and Nikki and The Plant- represent different approaches to overcoming access barriers through education, research translation, community assistance, and patient-centered support. Their contributions demonstrate that meaningful access requires more than a functioning marketplace or a medical cannabis law. It requires systems designed around the realities of the people who depend on them, because access is an essential part of patient safety.
