Nikki and the Plant turns lived patient experience and clinical knowledge into accessible medical cannabis education for people navigating illness, stigma, and often-conflicting information. Founded by former pediatric nurse practitioner Nikki Lawley, the platform grew out of her own experience trying to find answers after a traumatic brain injury dramatically changed her health and her life.
Lawley sustained the injury on the job in 2016 and was left with chronic pain and severe cognitive symptoms. When conventional treatments failed to provide adequate relief, her experience with medical cannabis changed the direction of her care and ultimately her career. The difficulty she encountered navigating cannabis as both a healthcare professional and a patient became the foundation for her work to help others face those decisions with better information and support.
Through Nikki and the Plant, she translates cannabis science and patient experience into educational content designed to be understandable to people who may already be overwhelmed by a serious health condition. Patient stories, educational resources, speaking engagements, and public outreach help people learn about medical cannabis options, prepare questions for healthcare professionals, and find a community that takes their experiences seriously.
Lawley understands the language and expectations of healthcare from her years as a pediatric nurse practitioner, while her traumatic brain injury placed her on the other side of the healthcare system as a patient searching for relief.
