For more than 25 years, STORZ & BICKEL has advanced whole-flower vaporization through German engineering, controlled heating, rigorous quality standards, and a commitment to offering an alternative to combustion. The company’s vaporizers are designed to heat cannabis flower at controlled temperatures so cannabinoids can be administered through inhalation without requiring patients to move to formulated vape oils or cartridges.
What distinguishes STORZ & BICKEL in the medical cannabis space is VAPORMED medical device line, including the VOLCANO MEDIC 2 and MIGHTY+ MEDIC, specifically intended for inhalation of cannabinoids from cannabis flower and cannabinoid preparations. These devices are classified as medical devices under the DIN EN 60601 standard for medical electrical equipment, are TÜV certified, and are manufactured under an EN ISO 13485 certified medical device quality management system. STORZ & BICKEL’s medical vaporizers are approved for medical application in several international markets, although the MEDIC devices are not currently approved for sale in the United States.
That medical device history stretches back more than a decade. STORZ & BICKEL received ISO 13485 quality management certification in 2009, and the original VOLCANO MEDIC was certified and introduced in 2010. The company describes it as the world’s first medical herbal hot air generator. Its portable MIGHTY MEDIC followed in 2015, bringing medically certified whole-flower vaporization into a handheld device.
STORZ & BICKEL devices have also been used as cannabinoid delivery systems in clinical research. Clinical trial protocols have used the VOLCANO MEDIC to vaporize measured cannabis doses for inhalation, including studies in which cannabis vapor was collected in the device’s valve balloon and administered to participants under investigator supervision. Other clinical research has used the MIGHTY MEDIC to administer controlled doses of THC and terpenoids through inhalation.
