Oklahomans for Safe Access (OSA) is a statewide coalition formed in 2026 to strengthen patient-centered medical cannabis policy, education, and advocacy as Oklahoma navigates a new era of state and federal cannabis policy. The Americans for Safe Access Oklahoma Action Group brings together the Cannabis Center of Excellence, Patients for Safe Access of Oklahoma (PFSA-OK), Synergistic Cannabis Consulting, and patient advocates Austin Jones and Steph Davis, combining experience in patient advocacy, healthcare, research, regulatory policy, and cannabis operations.

The coalition was created following the April 2026 changes in federal medical cannabis policy, recognizing that changes in federal law would create new questions for patients, healthcare professionals, regulators, businesses, and policymakers across Oklahoma. OSA is working to make sure patients are not left to navigate those changes on their own and that Oklahoma’s response includes the people most directly affected by medical cannabis policy.

Its priorities reach across the medical cannabis system. OSA works to advance patient-centered policy; provide evidence-based education for patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers; engage communities through public forums and advocacy; and address Schedule III readiness, laboratory testing, product safety, recalls, and patient protections. The coalition is also developing science-driven policy recommendations aimed at improving transparency, public health, and the effectiveness of Oklahoma’s medical cannabis program.

Product safety is an especially important part of that mission. Patients for Safe Access of Oklahoma brings patient perspectives to discussions about testing transparency and product quality, including the need for patients to have confidence that the medical cannabis they purchase has been appropriately tested and that they can understand the information available about those products. OSA’s broader work on laboratory standards, recalls, and regulatory accountability connects those patient concerns directly with research, compliance, and policymaking.

The coalition also gives patients a more meaningful role in decisions that affect their healthcare. As patient advocate Austin Jones explained when OSA launched, patients have too often lived under policies that shape their lives without having a meaningful role in creating them. OSA was organized to change that by making patient experience part of conversations about science, regulation, healthcare integration, and public health.

OSA is not a single organization asking other stakeholders to support its agenda. It is a coalition designed to combine different kinds of expertise around shared challenges facing Oklahoma patients. Researchers can help identify evidence gaps. Patients can explain how regulations work in real life. Compliance professionals and industry participants can identify operational problems. Healthcare professionals can help connect medical cannabis policy with patient care. Advocates can help turn those perspectives into policy recommendations and public education.

As Oklahoma adapts to changing medical cannabis laws, that network gives the state something increasingly important: a place where patient experience, scientific evidence, healthcare, regulation, and cannabis policy can inform one another. OSA’s goal is not simply to respond to individual problems after they arise, but to help Oklahoma develop a medical cannabis program that is safer, more transparent, more accountable, and better prepared for integration into healthcare.

Oklahomans for Safe Access demonstrates the kind of coalition building the Community Catalyst Award was created to recognize. By connecting patients, researchers, healthcare professionals, advocates, compliance experts, and responsible industry stakeholders, OSA is creating a statewide infrastructure for turning major policy changes into practical improvements for Oklahoma’s medical cannabis patients.
