BANNERS FLY FOR MEDICAL MARIJUANA AT WORLD SERIES

WHAT: In response to raids by the Drug Enforcement Administration on medical cannabis patients & dispensaries, a banner reading: DEFEND MEDICAL MARIJUANA will fly above PacBell Park at the beginning of Tuesday’s game.

WHERE: Pacific Bell Park, San Francisco

WHEN: Tuesday, October 22, 2002; 5:00 pm, at beginning of World Series game

WHO: Sponsored by Americans for Safe Access (ASA), a medical marijuana rights campaign. More details on ASA can be found online at www.safeaccessnow. org

WHY: Since October 2001, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has raided six medical marijuana dispensaries that operate in cooperation with local authorities in California. Eight medical marijuana providers have been convicted on federal charges, 25 more are facing charges, and 7 others have been raided by the DEA but no charges have yet been filed. Hundreds of patients have lost safe access to their medicine due to the intimidating raids on which federal authorities have spent unrevealed amounts of tax dollars and staff time.

MEDIA VISUALS: Large airplane banner reading DEFEND MEDICAL MARIJUANA will circle Pacific Bell Park 6 times.

BACKGROUND: The White House’s own comprehensive review of medical marijuana released by the Institute of Medicine in March of 1999 declared:
  • Smokable marijuana works as a medicine for some people.
  • Patients are already using medicinal marijuana despite its illegality.
  • Marijuana does not present significant health risks relative to medicines that are legally available.
  • No evidence that prison is better for patients than marijuana.
  • While more research should be conducted into marijuana's medical uses, [chronically or terminally ill] patients should be permitted to use marijuana in the meantime.
