June is Cannabis Safety Month!

Cannabis Safety Requires Participation from All Medical Cannabis Stakeholders

Every June, the National Safety Council hosts "National Safety Month," encouraging everyone to educate their communities and the public about safety in their respective sectors. Americans for Safe Access (ASA) is proud to participate by launching a comprehensive month-long campaign dedicated to cannabis safety.

Throughout June, we will focus on critical aspects of cannabis safety, including legal awareness, product quality, responsible use, and workplace safety:

June 2-8: Legal – What Cannabis is Legal? June 9-15: Products – What’s in Your Cannabis? June 16-22: Individuals – Safe Use of Cannabis June 23-29: Community – Workforce & Operator Safety

Join ASA in Debunking “Herban” Legends!

To kick off Cannabis Safety Month, we’re inviting cannabis stakeholders to help us debunk “Herban” Legends—persistent myths within our community. Many of us are familiar with prohibition-era myths, such as the outdated "gateway theory," which falsely suggested cannabis use inevitably led to harder drugs. In 2017, ASA successfully compelled the DEA to remove such misleading information based on its own findings (see details here).

However, numerous myths also originate within our own community. For example, 23 years ago, during ASA’s "Know Your Rights" trainings designed to protect patients and providers during DEA raids, we frequently encountered the false belief that law enforcement officers must disclose their status if directly asked. This myth was prevalent across every state and, importantly, is entirely untrue. Relying on such misinformation could inadvertently place our community members at significant legal risk.

What “Herban” Legend do you want to see debunked? Share your thoughts with us on ASA’s social media channels or email us: [email protected]. We may feature your submission in our campaign!

Follow along, join our interactive discussions, and help spread accurate, reliable information. Your participation is essential in creating a safer, healthier medical cannabis community!
