The Society of Cannabis Clinicians Dispensary Clinicians Committee grew out of the National Clinical Director Consortium, which began in Maryland in 2021 to address a gap many medical cannabis patients encounter after certification: access to a clinician who can help them understand how to use cannabinoid products safely once they enter the dispensary system.

The original model centered on making clinicians available to dispensary patients as a free service for education, medication review, dosing questions, and support around adverse events. The role was intentionally different from that of a certifying provider and separate from product sales. Its purpose was not to issue certifications or recommend products for commercial reasons, but to give patients access to healthcare professionals who could help them understand multiple cannabinoid products, ask better questions, and make more informed decisions about use.

As participating clinicians began meeting, another need became clear. Regulations governing clinical roles in dispensaries varied widely, and in many places the role was poorly defined or did not exist at all. The Consortium became a place for clinicians to compare experiences, support one another, and develop a clearer understanding of what responsible clinical practice could look like in a dispensary environment.

That work has now continued through the Society of Cannabis Clinicians Dispensary Clinicians Committee. As a newer SCC committee, it brings together physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other clinical specialists around a multidisciplinary model of cannabis care. The committee focuses on the practical questions patients bring to dispensaries: how cannabinoid products may interact with medications, how to approach dosing, what to do when unwanted effects occur, and how to distinguish useful education from sales-driven advice.

The setting makes that work especially important. For many patients, the dispensary is where product decisions actually happen, yet the people most qualified to discuss medication safety, adverse events, or complex health histories are not always available there. The Committee is working toward a model that brings clinical expertise closer to the moment of decision without turning dispensary clinicians into salespeople or replacing the patient’s existing healthcare team.

Its approach also emphasizes active listening. Safe cannabis education is not only about delivering information; it is about creating enough trust for patients to disclose what they are taking, describe what they are experiencing, and ask questions they may hesitate to raise elsewhere.

The Society of Cannabis Clinicians Dispensary Clinicians Committee reflects the Safety Signal Award by bringing balanced, evidence-informed clinical guidance closer to the point where patients select and use cannabis products. Its work helps create a stronger safety signal inside dispensaries by giving patients access to clinicians whose role is education, medication review, dosing support, and patient care rather than sales.

“The Society of Cannabis Clinicians’ Dispensary Clinicians Committee is honored to be nominated for ASA's 2026 award, the Cannabis Safety Award. As a newer committee of SCC, we carry forward the conversations begun through the National Clinical Director Consortium, highlighting a multidisciplinary approach to cannabis care: doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and other clinical specialists coming together to improve patient outcomes. We believe safer cannabis patient care depends on knowledgeable clinicians accessible through dispensaries who offer balanced, evidence-informed education alongside of active listening and encouragement to ask questions. We’re grateful this nomination recognizes the importance of that work.”
