Safe Storage for ME is a statewide initiative of the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy that provides free lockable storage bags to medical cannabis patients and adult-use consumers through participating retailers and public-health partners.

What began as a 2024 pilot with 5,000 bags and 222 participating medical and adult-use retailers has grown into a much larger prevention effort. In 2026, the program expanded to 12,000 bags distributed through more than 140 cannabis retailers and public-health advocates across all nine of Maine’s Public Health Districts.

The model is intentionally straightforward: remove cost as a barrier and put a secure storage option directly into the hands of people who use cannabis. Eligible patients and consumers can receive a lockable bag while supplies last, with no purchase required.

That practical approach supports a clear prevention goal. Secure storage can help reduce unintended access or ingestion by children, pets, and guests, while distribution through both cannabis retailers and public-health networks reaches people at the points where storage decisions are most relevant.

Safe Storage for ME's strength is its ability to turn a safety message into a tangible resource and then scale it statewide.

The Maine Office of Cannabis Policy advances the goals of the Lock It Down Award by making secure storage more accessible and by integrating cannabis safety into both the retail and public-health systems.
