Impaired driving is a legitimate public-safety concern and an important part of Cannabis Safety Month. Addressing it effectively requires accurate education about impairment and behavior rather than assumptions that every cannabis consumer is impaired or that the presence of cannabis metabolites alone answers every safety question.
The future of medical cannabis depends in part on demonstrating that roadway safety and patient access are compatible goals. Better education, research, training, transportation options, and prevention strategies can reduce impaired driving while helping policymakers avoid rules that unnecessarily penalize patients who use cannabis medicines responsibly.
