Cannabis safety extends beyond the quality of the product a patient purchases. Cultivation, manufacturing, packaging, transportation, and disposal can affect workers, neighboring communities, water resources, soil, wildlife, and public health. Energy intensive production, excessive water consumption, agricultural chemicals, and waste create environmental challenges, while illegal cultivation on public lands can leave behind toxic pesticides, damaged habitats, and extensive contamination. Developing sustainable cannabis systems requires addressing both the impacts of current production and the environmental damage associated with prohibition.

The Green Standard Award recognizes products, programs, technologies, facilities, and business practices that reduce the environmental impact of cannabis while maintaining product safety, integrity, accessibility, and regulatory compliance. It celebrates approaches such as regenerative agriculture, responsible water and energy management, safer cultivation practices, waste reduction, environmental restoration, and independent certification. These innovations offer ways to build environmental responsibility into the infrastructure of medical cannabis rather than treating sustainability as an unrelated concern.

The 2026 nominees illustrate two important dimensions of this work. The CROP Project draws attention to damage caused by illegal cultivation on public lands and advocates for cleanup and ecosystem restoration. Sun and Earth Certified advances regenerative, organic, sun-grown cultivation through standards addressing environmental stewardship, working conditions, and community responsibility. Together, their efforts demonstrate how cannabis sustainability can protect natural resources, strengthen public health, and support an environmentally responsible future for medical cannabis.
