Come and help Safe Access Virginia share the medical cannabis legislation and build relationships with our elected officials in Richmond. It's a federal holiday but the General Assembly will be in session. We will be holding a citizen lobby training session on Saturday, January 18 from Noon until 4 PM in Richmond to help prepare everyone for this lobby session.

Activist Training
When:
 Saturday, January 18, 2014, 12:00am -4:00pm
Where: Richmond Public Library Main branch located at 101 E. Franklin St., Richmond, VA 23219 from 12-4 PM.
Why: Join us in blazing a path for the future to ensure all patients have full, legal, safe access to medical cannabis.

This training will prepare citizen lobbyists to speak with legislators on Monday, January 20 at the state capitol regarding the Virginia Medical Cannabis Act which is draft legislation creating a law that allows Virginia residents safe, legal access to medical cannabis. We believe this decision is best left to a patient and doctor to decide as a doctor has the medical training to determine the best course of treatment.

If you plan on attending lobby day, please let us know if you need an appointment or not. We are willing to help you make appointments but need to know your address so we can determine who your legislators are. If you want to make your own appointments, just notify us of when, where, with whom and if you would like others to join you. When scheduling appointments, make sure you state that you are lobbying with Safe Access Virginia and if you want others to be with you, let the person know because they sometimes have to setup conference rooms for us. We want this to be as easy on everyone as possible.

In a time when many other states are listening to citizens’ voices regarding cannabis, Virginia is slowly falling behind but along with Safe Access Virginia, you can help change that. We hope to see you there.

When you attend Safe Access Virginia Lobby Day be ready to share your story. We will be asking people to speak with the media plus you need to have your story ready to share with legislators. Make sure it isn't rambling. It needs to be to the point, within about 3 minutes (approximately 1 single spaced typed page) and convey exactly why you believe Virginia needs medical cannabis access. Also, bring pictures to show the legislators. If you are able to meet with your legislator, a picture of yourself or the person for whom you are advocating speaks volumes. Here is a picture of me prior to my decision to stop taking anti depressants and anti anxiety medication. You can see in my eyes the difference from now and then. I was a zombie. - T.J.

Here is another piece of information with which you should become familiar. This is the overview of the draft legislation that Safe Access Virginia has ready to be introduced if a legislator will sponsor it. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ekiw-ysQjhZ_oHQpHkKzKyAgsaEJrt9CbigtSFSfiKg/edit?usp=sharing

If you plan on attending Lobby Day with us (which is a week away), please familiarize yourself with this bill. We will be lobbying against this bill with a possibility of having the Virginia Medical Cannabis Act introduced as an amendment to this bill. It could become interesting. Delegate Bob Marshall completely changed our strategy with HB684. http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?141+ful+HB684

Need to figure out how to contact your legislators in Richmond? Use this simple service by inputting your address to learn their names and contact information. Then contact them (or we can help with that), tell them you will be in Richmond with Safe Access Virginia on Monday, January 20 and would like an appointment to discuss medical cannabis as a constituent. Then let us know so we can update our meeting schedule. Also, attend the citizen lobby training in Richmond on January 18 (event is also on the SAV page) or watch the training videos to prepare yourself for this monumental day. http://conview.state.va.us/whosmy.nsf/VGAMain?openform
