ACTION:

Notice of Hearing on Patients Requiring Medicine: THE COMMONSENSE CANNABIS SCHEDULING HEARING

SUMMARY:

This is notice that Americans for Safe Access will hold a virtual hearing with respect to the proposed rescheduling of marijuana into schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act. The proposed rescheduling of marijuana was initially proposed in a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking published in the Federal Register on May 21, 2024.

BACKGROUND:

The DEA has scheduled administrative hearings on the scheduling of cannabis that will include testimony from only 19 witnesses, the majority of whom oppose any change in cannabis’s current scheduling. This stands in contrast to over 40,000 public comments submitted in support of removing cannabis from Schedule I. Information on the DEA hearings can be found here.

In response, Americans for Safe Access (ASA) will host “shadow” hearings running parallel to the DEA’s hearings. Our goal is to provide a more comprehensive view of cannabis as a medicine and to include the voices of those not represented in the DEA proceedings

DATES:

Interested persons desiring to participate in this hearing must fill out the application below to notify ASA of their desired participation on or before January 18, 2025. The hearing will commence on January 21, 2025, through March 6. (Note: These dates are subject to change due to pending appeals in various circuit courts.)

LOCATION:

The Commonsense Cannabis Scheduling Hearings will be primarily virtual. There may also be an in-person component in Washington, D.C.

FOR PRESS INQUIRES:

If you are a press outlet that would like to participate in hearings, please contact [email protected] subject: Press Shadow Hearings

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:

To apply to participate as a witness, please complete the following application. The deadline for Submissions is January 9th, 2025. If you want to join as a technical expert, consider providing testimony on research or topics that were NOT included in HHS's Basis for the Recommendation to Reschedule Marijuana into Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act.
