Mohammed Mustafa

CCMI Advisory Group Member

Mohammed is the laboratory manager of a cannabinoid research lab at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is also getting his PhD in pharmacology & toxicology. His areas of expertise include behavioral pharmacology, cannabinoid pharmacology, and modulation of the endocannabinoid system by cannabis and other novel compounds in pre-clinical models. Mohammed got involved with advocacy in 2012 when he attended an ASA chapter meeting in San Francisco during a trip there.

Upon his return to the D.C. area, he connected with the local chapter and advocated for the District Council to implement the medical cannabis program it had enacted in 2010. Additionally, he helped found ASA's Safe Access Virginia chapter in 2014. He has presented at various local and international cannabinoid science conferences and has over a dozen peer-reviewed publications with prominent scientists such as the late Dr. Raphael Mechoulam. He sees his role as a scientist advisor as benefiting advocates by helping formulate talking points backed by science when they’re educating policymakers on how cannabis should be regulated and how it can treat medical conditions such as pain.
