I am very concerned about the lack of medical cannabis legislation in the 118th Congress. We need leaders in DC to understand issues facing patients and pass comprehensive legislation to allow medical cannabis to evolve past state programs and restore patient federal protections.
The rescheduling of cannabis alone will not help patients; I belong to an organization called Americans for Safe Access, which is calling for comprehensive federal legislation that will create a national cannabis program (not nationalize the state programs). This will include the creation of a new schedule for all cannabis products, Schedule VI (removing criminal penalties but creating oversight for medical and hemp products), and the creation of a new agency under HHS, the Office of Medical Cannabis and Cannabinoid Control.
