Background: For the last decade, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have been barred from using federal funds to enforce federal cannabis laws in states with medical cannabis laws through an amendment to their budget (CJS Amendment). For the past few years, this amendment has been part of the original bill text. This amendment is not included in this year's appropriation bill, and advocates will have to fight to ensure these protections are expanded for another year to prolong the "cease-fire" until we secure legislation to create a national medical cannabis program.
