Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) Unpacked

What do we actually know about CHS, and what remains uncertain? Join experts for a closer look at symptoms, risk factors, diagnosis, treatment, the relationship between CHS and CUD, and how we can improve education without stigmatizing patients or people who use cannabis.

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) can cause recurring episodes of severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and dehydration, yet it can be difficult for both patients and healthcare professionals to recognize, diagnose, and discuss. This webinar will examine what is known and what remains uncertain about CHS, including potential risk factors, diagnostic challenges, treatment approaches, and the importance of distinguishing CHS from other medical conditions. Speakers will also discuss why CHS and Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) are sometimes linked or conflated in healthcare settings and what those distinctions can mean for patients.

The conversation will explore how patients, clinicians, healthcare systems, and cannabis programs can improve CHS education and recognition while addressing legitimate safety concerns without stigmatizing people who use cannabis.

Speakers:

Codi Peterson, PharmD, Associate Clinical Professor, UC Irvine; Co-founder, Pharmacists’ Cannabis Coalition of California, is a pediatric and emergency department pharmacist whose work focuses on cannabis pharmacology, endocannabinoid system (ECS) science, and clinician education.

Michelle Zang, BSN, RN, is a certified case manager and the first cannabis care nurse educator in the nation for Health Plan of Nevada, UnitedHealthcare.

Dr. Rick Pescatore, DO, is a board-certified emergency physician, founder and CEO of BellyMD, editor-in-chief of Emergency Medicine News, and a contributing author to the Merck Manual. He is a national expert in managing cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, has led NIDA-funded programs on substance use care in emergency medicine since 2016, and served as Chief Physician of Delaware's Division of Public Health.

Melanie is a cancer survivor and patient advocate sharing her experience with cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS). After years of cannabis use during and after cancer treatment, she experienced recurrent episodes of CHS before ultimately stopping cannabis. She hopes her experience can provide a helpful patient perspective on CHS.

Moderator:

Steph Sherer, Founder and President of Americans for Safe Access, founded ASA in 2002 and has spent more than two decades advancing medical cannabis policy, patient safety, research, and access.
