Medical Cannabis Advocacy Academy - Annapolis, MD

The ASA Advocacy Academy is a day of workshops and presentations for new and seasoned advocates to learn about the national upcoming changes in the federal political landscape for cannabis, the opportunities/challenges they present, and how to engage in a national campaign to finally win federal rights.

Many cannabis supporters and stakeholders may not understand the issues still facing patients, nor the role they had in creating the existing cannabis marketplace. The truth is medical cannabis patients in the United States still do not enjoy the same freedoms afforded to other Americans, and for millions of Americans medical cannabis is still not option. Unfortunately, many medical cannabis patients and their caregivers have become accustomed to these restrictions, navigating their life decisions through a series of obstacles and hurdles invisible to most Americans.

Without federal medical cannabis legislation, cannabis will likely become a commodity like alcohol and dietary supplements. This would mean that doctors would not learn about its benefits to share with their patients, insurance coverage would be out of reach for patients in need, and individuals would continue to face discrimination and prosecution for their treatment.

It is essential that we act now, before the hope of cannabis as a medicine is lost for those who most need it, and it becomes a commodity that is only available to those that can afford it. Participants will sharpen their advocacy skills, practice campaign messaging, and participate in strategy discussions and brainstorming sessions to learn about and improve campaign activities.
