HR 689 States' Medical Marijuana Patient Protection Act (2013)

Sponsored by Rep. Blumenuaer (D-OR), HR 689 would reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I drug, which cannot be prescribed, to one between Schedule III and V, which would recognize its medical value and make it easier for research to take place. The act would also prevent interference by the federal government in any local or state-run medical marijuana program and provide protection under federal law for state-qualifi ed patients and caregivers. As of September 29, 2014, the bill has 26 cosponsors, but has not had a committee hearing.
