MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Hearings get under way Wednesday at the state Capitol on allowing seriously ill patients to smoke marijuana to ease their pain and suffering.

The Vermont House Health and Welfare Committee will hear two days of testimony from patients and medical experts. Last year, the Senate passed a bill legalizing medical marijuana for patients who get a doctor's approval.

A recent Zogby poll showed that 71 percent of Vermonters approve of the idea.
