Guilty Verdict In Medicinal Marijuana Case In Cool

It took a jury in Federal court about three hours to hand down a guilty verdict in a local medicinal marijuana case that goes back six years.

Doctor Marion Fry and her husband Dale Schafer were found guilty of growing and distributing pot from their office in the town of Cool.

The couple started recommending medicinal pot to patients after a state proposition was passed. However, federal drug agents say it was being used to treat anxiety and even PMS.

Undercover agents with no medical records say the couple granted them unrestricted amounts of the drug.

Fry says she believes she was obeying California law. Schafer says the jury wasn't allowed to hear what was going on and only got to hear the federal version.

Medical necessity is not a defense to federal charges. The couple faces up to 40 years in prison when sentenced in November.

The couple plans to appeal.
