The Palm Desert City Council is set to pass an emergency moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries at a hastily called meeting at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Civic Center, 73-510 Fred Waring Drive.

The proposed moratorium has put a halt to plans for a Christmas Day opening of a medical marijuana dispensary at 74-273 Highway 111. Pierre Werner of Las Vegas, who applied for a business license for the dispensary in November, was disappointed, he said, but is willing to work with city officials.

Mayor Jim Ferguson said the proposed moratorium will not affect CannaHelp, formerly Hempie's, the medical marijuana dispensary that has been operating since October at 73-350 El Paseo.

"This gives us breathing room to come up with an ordinance that lets everyone know how (dispensaries) will be recognized," Ferguson said.
