Whittier may legalize medical marijuana
December 14, 2005
Associated Press, KESQ News (Palm Springs, CA)Whittier may soon become the latest California city to allow medical marijuana dispensaries. The City Council voted 3-2 yesterday to let up to 12 such establishments open up. But the ordinance still needs to be approved at the council's January 10th meeting.
It would require any dispensaries be a thousand feet away from schools and prohibit anyone under 21 from entering.
Mayor Greg Nordbak and two other councilmen who supported the ordinance said they wanted to ensure the city could regulate it.
Medical marijuana dispensaries have been legal under state law since 1996, but federal law forbids the possession and use of pot. Currently 21 cities in California allow them.
