Riverside County to issue pot I-D cards

November 30, 2005

Riverside County will begin offering up to four-thousand photo identification cards to marijuana users today. It's the first Southern California county to comply with a state law intended to shield medical marijuana patients from arrests.

However, the cards are being issued at a time when state and federal laws conflict over the use of medical marijuana.

Federal authorities could seize and destroy the illegal crop and arrest growers and consumers -- even in California where medical marijuana use is allowed.

Riverside authorities say they're aware of the conflict, but maintain the cards could help protect medicinal marijuana users from prosecution by local law enforcement.
