A public memorial was held this week for medicinal marijuana advocate Steve McWilliams, who killed himself last week, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. According to a note he left at his side, McWilliams ended his life to both end his suffering and bring attention to his cause. He suffered chronic pain due to a motorcycle accident. Activists and friends gathered this week to remember him in the public square where he smoked marijuana in the open and handed out samples. McWilliams campaigned for years to get the government to allow medical marijuana use, pushing San Diego officials until the city became the largest in the nation to approve medical marijuana use, the Union-Tribune reported.

Activists across the nation, in more than a dozen cities, held events coinciding with the San Diego memorial.
