Medical Marijuana Activist Mourned

July 18, 2005

A memorial service is being planned in several cities for medical marijuana activist Steve McWilliams, who committed suicide last week. Fellow activists held a memorial at San Diego's City Hall Tuesday, while similar events are scheduled to be held in 15 other cities.

McWilliams killed himself a week ago in an effort to end the persistent pain he endured after a motorcycle accident. McWilliams was best known for pushing San Diego into becoming the largest city in the nation to adopt a medical marijuana law.

His supporters also plan to hold a candlelight vigil in his memory Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
