Morro Bay temporarily bans dispensaries for medical marijuana
May 09, 2005
No new purveyors of medical marijuana can legally open in Morro Bay for the next month and a half, Morro Bay City Council decided Monday night.
Morro Bay is following the lead of other local cities, including Atascadero, San Luis Obispo, Grover Beach, Pismo Beach and Arroyo Grande. The temporary ban passed in a 4-1 vote with Councilwoman Melody DeMeritt dissenting.
In his report, City Attorney Rob Schultz said the doling out of medical marijuana needs to be regulated to avoid being 'detrimental to the public health, safety and welfare.'
The Supreme Court is expected to rule this summer on whether patients have the right to use marijuana for medical reasons, which local officials hope will clear up conflicts between state and federal law.
