SANTA CRUZ, Calif.—The DuBois Street pot shop is open for business.

The medical marijuana dispensary in the Harvey West industrial area, the first to open in Santa Cruz County, is expected to serve an estimated 3,000 people.

“Finally,” owner Lisa Molyneux said Wednesday. It’s taken 14 months for the Boulder Creek thyroid cancer patient to obtain the necessary city permits and approvals to open Greenway Compassionate Relief Inc. The City Council approved the facility in July.

Molyneux said she’s spent about $100,000 to start the business, including monthly rent for the 5,000-square-foot office and arranging security. Local patients will no longer have to travel to San Francisco, Oakland or Hayward for medical marijuana, Molyneux said.

Medical marijuana patients chose their pot Wednesday like someone picking out a cookie or muffin from a bakery. Large glass cases contained a range of marijuana varieties with names such as “Haze Heaven,” “Sativa Special,” “Ron’s Rags” and “Morning Star.”
