Marijuana Protest Leads to Arrests at White House - Americans for Safe Access

WASHINGTON ( Reuters Health ) - Two people were arrested Monday after handcuffing themselves to the White House fence to protest recent federal government raids on 'medical marijuana' cooperatives in California. The arrests occurred after about two dozen demonstrators gathered in front of the White House, holding signs and chanting slogans demanding an end to what they see as Bush administration interference with state laws governing marijuana use.

THE SANTA CRUZ rally for medical marijuana shows how strongly Californians feel about using cannabis products to relieve human suffering. Hundreds came to Tuesday's City Hall pot giveaway -- even the mayor, council members and a county supervisor. As did most of the participants, the public officials came to support the dozen or so gravely ill residents who rely on marijuana to ease the effects of chemotherapy, cancer and other diseases. But the rally went beyond a mere demonstration of compassion.

The Crackdown on Medical Marijuana The month of September has seen a dramatic escalation of the War on Drugs in California, with DEA raids on two leading medical marijuana dispensaries. On September 5th, DEA agents arrested Valerie and Michael Corral of WAMM (Wo/Men's alliance for Medical Marijuana) and destroyed 150 marijuana plants intended for use by WAMM's members, most of whom are terminally ill. On September 12, the Petaluma-based Genesis 1:29 medical cannabis dispensary was raided, and Robert Schmidt, the owner, was arrested by the DEA.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Sept. 17 — Christopher Krohn, mayor of this laid-back beach town, wore his pinstriped suit to work today because he wanted to appear serious before the television cameras. Mayor Krohn, several City Council members and two former mayors gathered in front of City Hall this afternoon to witness a medical marijuana giveaway in protest of a federal raid two weeks ago on a local cannabis collective.
